Biography

Painter in oil and watercolour of portraits, genre and landscapes. He was born in
Dewsbury, and studied art in his spare time from the age of 17, but it was not until
1890 that he was able to take up art full-time,studying in Paris and Herkomer's School
in Bushey. He exhibited from that year at the R.A. , the R.B.A. and in the provinces.
He was elected R.B.A. in 1903. His portraits and figure subjects were normally painted
in oiland his landscapes in watercolour. He lived in Harrogate and painted many views
of Knaresborough and other local subjects. He lived in West Cornwall, in St. Ives and
Carbis Bay, during the last five years of his life, painting across Cornwall up to his death in 1924.
